A stuffed eagle stands inside Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the building where the Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted, in this daguerreotype made around 1845. The record credits W. G. Mason as the probable maker. By the 1840s the bald eagle had long served as a national emblem, and a mounted specimen in the nation's most revered room would have carried obvious patriotic meaning for visitors. The small plate, a sixth-plate daguerreotype, shows how early photography captured both historic interiors and the objects that filled them.
