Farm and fireside" pairs the outdoor work of a farm with the warmth of the home indoors, a contrast the title announces up front. The print was issued by Currier & Ives, the New York firm whose lithographs of rural life, including farmyards, winter scenes and family hearths, were sold widely across the country in the late nineteenth century. Its c1878 date falls within the years when such sentimental country views were especially popular with buyers who had little firsthand knowledge of farm work. It is listed as number 2039 in the firm's catalog raisonné, a standard reference for collectors and researchers.
