Published across two facing pages of *Harper's Weekly* on August 10, 1867, "Life on the Farm" was drawn by an artist identified only as Herrick and reproduced as a wood engraving. Wood engraving let a weekly magazine print detailed scenes of ordinary life alongside its news and fiction, and the 1860s were a busy period for such rural genre pictures. The piece is a useful record of how a national audience, many of them city readers, was shown the work and routines of farm life in the years after the Civil War. Its two-page spread also shows how the magazine used large illustrations to hold readers' attention.
