Catalogued as no. 0144 in Gale Research's raisonné of Currier & Ives prints, this 1868 lithograph carries the plain title *American farm life* and was issued from the firm's New York office. Currier & Ives sold inexpensive lithographs, often hand-colored, to a broad public, and rural scenes of farm work and country life were among their steady sellers in the years after the Civil War. Pictures like this gave city buyers an image of the countryside at a time when farming was still central to American life and the nation was industrializing quickly.
