Horace Greeley's farm at Chappaqua, in Westchester County, is the particular subject here, and Currier & Ives chose to show it as the home of a man who was then one of the best-known figures in American public life. Greeley founded the New-York Tribune and ran for president in 1872 as the Liberal Republican and Democratic candidate, losing decisively to Ulysses S. Grant that November. The print appeared the same year, when the estate was a national talking point, and it presents the farm as a respectable country seat. The lithograph is catalogued in the Currier & Ives catalog raisonné, which makes it a useful reference for the firm's rural and estate views of the 1870s.
