Farm and fireside" is one of the many Currier & Ives lithographs published in New York around 1878, when the firm was producing color prints of rural and domestic life for a broad middle-class market. The title pairs two of the firm's favorite subjects, the working farm and the warm household interior. The catalog number 2039 refers to the Gale Research catalog raisonné, which documents the firm's output. Lithography allowed the firm to make affordable runs of colored images that were sold widely, so prints like this one show how many Americans of the period pictured country life.
