A Caille-Schiemer Co. bagatelle machine, with cigars listed as the prize, is shown here in use. Bagatelle, a game of shooting small balls among pins into scoring pockets, was a common amusement in saloons, cigar stores and billiard halls in the early 1900s, and machines like this one were an early step toward the pinball games that followed. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1910, recorded everyday American life across the country, and its scenes of commercial leisure like this one offer a useful look at how amusement and the tobacco trade overlapped at the time.
