This 1936 silkscreen poster advertises "Indian Art of the United States," an exhibition organized by the Indian Arts and Crafts Board of the U.S. Department of the Interior and shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Its design is credited to an artist named Pistchal, and it was produced under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, the New Deal program that employed artists during the Depression. The show's subtitle, "Prehistoric Art: Living Tradition," framed Native American craft as a continuing tradition rather than a vanished past, a view that set it apart from many museum displays of the era.
