The poster announces an exhibition of Native American art at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, a setting that put Indigenous making alongside modernist art on one of the city's leading stages. It was produced in silkscreen under the Federal Art Project, the arm of the Works Progress Administration that employed artists during the Depression, and the Indian Arts and Crafts Board of the U.S. Department of the Interior sponsored it. The Board had been created in 1935 to promote Native American arts and crafts and to support Native makers economically. The work is attributed to Pistchal, and its bold flat color reflects the graphic style of WPA poster design.
