Going--going--gone!" is a recruiting poster for the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps, the branch that oversaw the U.S. Army's flying units until the Army Air Service replaced it in 1918. Its auction-style title, echoing the call that closes a sale, suggests that places in the service were about to be taken, a pitch aimed at young men who might want to learn to fly. The poster dates from 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, when recruiting drives multiplied nationwide. It is part of the Willard and Dorothy Straight Collection at the Library of Congress.
