The poster asks its reader directly: Colonel Fowler is calling for men for the 104th, and are you going with him? That personal challenge, rather than a description of battle, was a common way to raise units in the Canadian Expeditionary Force after Britain entered the war in August 1914, when local commanders recruited battalions from their own towns. The color lithograph, about 75 by 106 centimeters, was a large display piece meant to be read from across a street. Its record also lists the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation as sponsor, an American agency that came well after this Canadian poster, so that credit line is worth a second look.
