This 1918 lithograph is a local appeal from Poughkeepsie, New York, urging residents to give up books so that American servicemen would have reading material. Its slogan, "No days are bookless days," asks townspeople to make a small personal sacrifice for "our boys" overseas. During the First World War, libraries and civic groups ran book drives to stock camp libraries and troop ships, since soldiers often had little to read during long stretches of training and waiting. The poster, signed by F. R. Booth, shows how home-front campaigns of the period used everyday civic pride to recruit participation.
