Cut in linoleum rather than printed from stone or type, this 1916 poster advertised an exhibition of British war paintings and drawings at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, held March 7 to April 3. Harry L. Gage cut the blocks, and his students in the Carnegie Institute of Technology's printing department ran them on a cylinder press. The design shows an aviator, a subject of wide interest during the First World War, when aircraft were still new to combat. The lettering was printed over the aviator, and no complete copy of the poster is known to survive.
