Official United States War Films Now Being Shown is a 1917 record of the government's effort to bring the First World War to American audiences on the screen. The United States entered the war in April 1917, and the Committee on Public Information, created that spring under George Creel, took a major role in producing and promoting official films, pamphlets and posters to rally public support. Notice how the title itself is an advertisement: it marks a moment when cinema was becoming a tool of wartime persuasion as well as entertainment.
