This color poster, printed in New York in 1917, advertises "Official United States war films" under the name Stoner. It appeared within months of the country's entry into the First World War in April 1917, when the federal government was turning to motion pictures to explain the war and encourage enlistment and support at home. The poster's subject lines point to military personnel and campaigns of the war, so its appeal rests on the promise of official footage of American troops in action. Its bold lettering and bright color reflect the commercial lithography of the period, when posters were a main way to sell films.
