Rather than rallying recruits or selling bonds, this 1917 lithograph asks ordinary shoppers to see themselves as shareholders, arguing that every dollar spent flows into "the General Stock Company of American Industry" and returns as wages and profits. The National Industrial Conservation Movement of New York City issued it after the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, when factories were straining to meet military demand and strikes threatened production. Its call to "do your bit for Democracy" by cooperating with local business people shows how wartime messages tied economic harmony to patriotic duty, with Uncle Sam serving as the familiar symbol of national purpose.
