Numbered "No. 1" and titled "British navy at war," this 1915 halftone poster presents the fleet and its admirals to the public. It was issued by Geo. Pulman & Sons of Thayer Street in London, part of a wartime wave of commercial posters that used photographs to build public confidence. In 1915 the Royal Navy was enforcing a blockade of Germany and guarding the sea lanes, work far less visible to civilians than the fighting on land. The poster's catalog subjects also list wartime communications, a reminder that these images were meant to carry the navy's story home.
