Anoka, Minnesota, sat where the Rum River meets the Mississippi, about twenty miles northwest of Minneapolis, and in 1869 it was a lumber and milling town. Sawmills and flour mills drew power from the Rum's falls, and logs cut in the northern pine country floated downriver to be sawn into boards for the growing settlements to the south. The Mississippi carried steamboat traffic past the town, and the arrival of rail service in the region was opening new routes for farm produce and goods. Anoka was then a young community of merchants, mill hands, and farm families, many of them recent arrivals from New England, New York, and northern Europe. Residents would have known it chiefly as a river town whose fortunes rose and fell with the lumber trade and the seasonal flow of the water.
