Austin, the seat of Mower County in southeastern Minnesota, was still a young town in 1870, set along the Cedar River amid prairie farmland. Its growth followed the railroad, which had reached the town only a few years earlier, so grain and livestock from nearby farms moved out by rail while lumber, hardware and dry goods came in. Migrants from the eastern states, Germany and Scandinavia were taking up farms and town lots, and the courthouse, churches and schools marked a community still deciding what kind of place it would become. Wheat was the crop most growers in the region relied on, though many were starting to diversify as soils weakened and prices shifted. The street-by-street detail on this sheet shows a town still made mostly of frame houses and open lots.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Austin, Minnesota, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
