Mankato, the seat of Blue Earth County, sat on the Minnesota River in 1870, a few years after the railroad arrived and about eight years after the Dakota War of 1862 had scarred the region. Its economy rested on grain, flour milling powered by the river, and the trade that moved through its growing business district. Residents of the 1870s would have remembered the town for the execution of 38 Dakota men on December 26, 1862, the largest mass hanging in American history, an event that still shaped how the community viewed its own past. The Mankato Normal School, opened in 1868, was new that decade and was becoming a source of civic pride alongside the churches, schools, and newspapers of a town still finding its footing.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Mankato, Minnesota, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
