Stillwater, Minnesota, in 1870 was a river town on the St. Croix, about 25 miles east of St. Paul, and its economy rested on lumber. Logs floated down the St. Croix from the pine forests to the north were cut at sawmills along the riverfront, and the town's lumber trade made it one of the most important milling centers in the state. Stillwater was also the county seat of Washington County and home to the territorial prison, which had opened in the 1850s and stood as a landmark on the hills above town. Steamboats carried passengers and freight between Stillwater and St. Paul, and that river link shaped daily life, commerce, and civic affairs. Residents of the period would have known Stillwater first as a sawmill town with a busy levee and a growing business district.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Stillwater, Minnesota, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
