Owatonna, Minnesota, in 1870 was a young railroad and farm town on the Straight River in Steele County, only about a decade past its first settlement. The Winona and St. Peter Railroad had reached it in the mid-1860s, and wheat and other grain from the surrounding prairie moved out by rail, making milling and grain buying central to local commerce. As county seat, Owatonna drew farmers from nearby townships on market days, filling its stores, banks, and courthouse business. Residents would have known it as a stop on the line toward the Minnesota River valley, where new frame houses went up as fast as lots could be sold.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Owatonna, Minnesota, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
