Rochester, the seat of Olmsted County in southeastern Minnesota, was a young farm-service town in 1869, only a decade or so past its first settlement. Its economy rested on the surrounding wheat and corn fields, and grain moved out through local warehouses and mills as the railroad, which had reached the town in the mid-1860s, made shipping easier. Residents would have known Rochester as a county center where merchants, lawyers, and county officials conducted business on a handful of main streets. Dr. William Worrall Mayo had set up his medical practice there by this time, and his work would later make the town known far beyond the region.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Rochester, Minnesota, drawn in 1869. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
