Faribault, the seat of Rice County in southern Minnesota, was a small river town of mills and schools along the Cannon River in 1869. The Winona and St. Peter Railroad had reached it only a couple of years earlier, opening grain shipments to markets beyond the town. Mills along the river, including woolen operations, gave work to local families, while farmers from the surrounding prairie brought wheat and other produce to town. Institutions already set the town apart: Shattuck School, an Episcopal boys' academy, drew students from afar, and the state schools for the deaf and blind had opened there in the 1860s. Residents of the day would have known Faribault as a place of learning as much as commerce.
