Hastings, Minnesota, in 1867 was a river town where the Vermillion River drops toward the Mississippi, and its mills drew power from that falling water. Wheat from the surrounding prairie farms, which had grown fast since Minnesota became a state in 1858, was ground locally and carried downriver, and steamboats worked the landing below the bluffs. As the seat of Dakota County, Hastings also drew lawyers, merchants, and farmers to its county offices on business. Residents would have known the town as a busy stop on the upper river trade. This view records its mills, landing, and streets as they stood that year.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Hastings, Minnesota, drawn in 1867. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
