Winona, Minnesota, in 1867 was a river town of a few thousand people on the Mississippi, where steamboats loaded wheat and flour for downriver markets and sawmills along the water turned logs floated down from northern forests into lumber. The railroad had reached the town only in the early 1860s, and its line was carrying farm produce from the prairie counties to the riverfront. Residents knew Winona as a commercial landing and a home to German, Norwegian and Yankee families, set between the river and steep limestone bluffs that limited where streets and houses could grow. Spring floods and ice-bound winters shaped daily work along the levee as much as local elections did.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Winona, Minnesota, drawn in 1867. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
