Lake City, Minnesota, in 1867 was a river town on the western shore of Lake Pepin, where the Mississippi widens into a lake below the bluffs of Wabasha County. Its livelihood came from the water: steamboats tied up at its landing to take on wheat and other produce from the farms on the prairie behind town, while lumber cut in the northern pineries floated downstream on rafts and barges. Minnesota had become a state only nine years earlier, in 1858, and settlers were still arriving from New England, New York and Germany to claim land and open stores, mills and churches. The country had just come out of the Civil War, and the town's residents would have measured their prospects by the river trade and by the railroad lines then pushing west across the state.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Lake City, Minnesota, drawn in 1867. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
