Luverne, the seat of Rock County in the far southwestern corner of Minnesota, was a young prairie town in 1883, only about a decade past its founding. Its growth rested on wheat and then mixed farming across the surrounding flat land, with grain elevators and the rail line carrying crops and lumber to eastern markets. The county courthouse and the stores along the main business streets made the town the center of local government and trade for farm families scattered across the county. Residents would have known the place by its nearby landmark, the Blue Mounds, a rise of dark rock that stood out sharply from the open prairie and could be seen for miles.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Luverne, Minnesota, drawn in 1883. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
