St. Paul in 1883 was a river city of wholesale houses, rail yards, and breweries that had grown far beyond the landing of the 1850s. James J. Hill's Manitoba railroad, headquartered in the city, was pushing its lines west across the Dakota plains, which made St. Paul a clearinghouse for freight and settlers bound for the northern prairies. Theodore Hamm's brewery and other German-owned businesses supplied a city of many immigrant neighborhoods, and their beer and wagons were a familiar sight on the streets. That year the new state capitol on its hill was nearing completion, and residents would have known the town as the seat of government and a busy hub of rail and river commerce.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of St. Paul, Minnesota, drawn in 1883. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
