In 1874 Winona was a Mississippi River town whose fortunes rose and fell with the grain and produce farmers hauled in from the surrounding counties. The Panic of 1873 had tightened credit and slowed building, and many local merchants were still waiting for business to recover. Grasshopper swarms that devoured crops across southern Minnesota in 1873 and 1874 deepened the shortfall, leaving farm families with less to sell at the landing. Meanwhile the Winona State Normal School, which had opened in 1860 to train teachers, continued to draw students to the city. Residents would have known Winona first as a place of wharves, schoolrooms and anxious talk about wheat prices.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Winona, Minnesota, drawn in 1874. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
