Northfield, Minnesota, in 1869 was a young river town in the Cannon River valley, barely fifteen years removed from its founding in the mid-1850s. Its growth rested on flour and lumber milling at the river's falls and on the wheat farming that spread across the surrounding prairie. The railroad reached the town in 1867, linking local grain and goods to Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Chicago markets. Carleton College had been chartered in 1866 and was preparing to open its doors, giving the town an educational identity beyond the mill yards and grain warehouses.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Northfield, Minnesota, drawn in 1869. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
