Among the many horse studies here, this plate shows a horse named in its caption as Abe Edington, moving at a plain walk. Leland Stanford had Muybridge photograph his horses at Palo Alto in 1878 and 1879 to settle whether a horse ever has all four feet off the ground. The sequence was published in 1881 as number 8 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. Its slow, even gait breaks the motion into small steps, which is why the series is often counted as a forerunner of motion pictures.
