Among the many Muybridge plates of horses on this board, this albumen print stands apart for its plain subject: a horse simply walking, captured as a sequence of positions rather than in a gallop or a jump. It was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, when Eadweard Muybridge set up a row of cameras along a track to photograph animals in motion, and it was later published in 1881 as plate no. 10 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. Walking was the gait that most clearly showed the sequence of leg movements, which is why the series is still studied today as an early step toward motion pictures.
