Among the Palo Alto studies, this plate shows a horse at a walk, the slowest gait Eadweard Muybridge recorded. The series was made in 1878 and 1879 at Leland Stanford's horse farm, with cameras triggered by threads stretched across the track, to answer a long-running question about how horses actually move. The print was published in 1881 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where it appears as number 12. Its sequence of frames shows how a walking horse lifts and sets down each leg in turn, a detail that painters had often gotten wrong.
