Among the Muybridge motion studies, this plate isolates a horse walking, one of the simplest gaits to capture, and it appears as number 9 in the 1881 book The Attitudes of Animals in Motion. Eadweard Muybridge made the series at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras with trip wires that fired in quick succession as the animal passed. The sequence of stills was a landmark: it settled a long-running question about whether all four hooves leave the ground at once during a gallop, and it showed that the motion of the legs in walking was far more complex than most painters had drawn it.
