Among the Palo Alto sequences, this plate shows a horse at a walk, a gait that looks simple but breaks down into a steady rhythm of separate footfalls. Eadweard Muybridge made the series in 1878 and 1879 with a row of cameras whose shutters were tripped by threads stretched across the track. The albumen print appeared in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* as number 11 in the book's index, and the project is often cited as an early step toward the moving picture.
