Whyay-Ring, a member of the Santa Clara Pueblo, sits for this portrait, one of many studies Edward S. Curtis made of Native people for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*. Santa Clara is a Tewa-speaking pueblo in northern New Mexico, and Curtis worked among Tewa communities in the first decade of the twentieth century, pairing individual portraits with ceremonial and daily-life scenes. His posed studies reflect the photographer's choices about setting, lighting and dress as much as the sitter's everyday life, which makes them worth reading with that in mind.
