The record identifies this young sitter by name as Nabkatsheb, a Tewa girl from Nambe Pueblo in New Mexico. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1905 as part of his long effort to document Native peoples of North America, a project that gathered portraits, ceremonies and everyday life across many communities. Nambe is one of the Tewa-speaking pueblos near Santa Fe, and the image offers a close, direct view of a child from that community at the turn of the twentieth century.
