Globe, Arizona, sat in the foothills of the Pinal Mountains as a copper and silver mining town, and this view from about 1908 shows a settlement built around the work of extracting ore from the hills above it. Mining towns of this period were often laid out quickly on steep, narrow ground, so townscapes like this one record how closely daily life depended on the nearby shafts, smelters and freight roads. The print's copyright registration in the name of George H. Thwaites suggests it was produced as a commercial view, and it remains a useful record of how Arizona's mining towns looked in the early 1900s.
