This portrait shows Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias, the Texas-born athlete who became one of the most versatile competitors of her era. At the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics she won two gold medals in track and field, in the javelin and the 80-meter hurdles. She later excelled in basketball and golf, and she won multiple major championships in women's professional golf, helping to widen opportunities for women in sports during a period when they were limited.
