Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias is the sports star this portrait shows, and her career ranged across track and field, basketball, and golf at a time when few women competed at that level. Born in Port Arthur, Texas, in 1911, she won two gold medals and a silver at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics before turning to golf, where she won the U.S. Women's Open in 1950 and became one of the dominant players of her era. Portraits of her circulated widely as she grew into a national celebrity, and her expression and bearing here reflect that public image.
