Rumer Godden, the British novelist, appears in this head-and-shoulders portrait turned to the left, taken in 1963. Born in England in 1907, she became known for novels set partly in India, where she spent parts of her childhood, and *Black Narcissus* was adapted into a 1947 film. The print comes from the New York World-Telegram and the Sun newspaper collection, which holds the photographs its staff gathered for daily reporting. The image offers a plain, direct view of a writer whose work drew so heavily on her experience of India.
