Roy Atkins is the subject of this gelatin silver portrait, dated September 19, 1934, a detail taken from the back of the original print. It belongs to the series of celebrity portraits that Carl Van Vechten made in the 1930s, when he was photographing writers, performers, and artists, mostly in New York. Van Vechten numbered his work in his own catalog, and this print carries the number III G 43. His estate gave the collection to the Library of Congress in 1966.
