Piccadilly Circus in 1909 was one of the busiest junctions in London, where Regent Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, Coventry Street and Piccadilly met around the Shaftesbury Memorial, the bronze archer that Londoners called Eros and that had stood there since 1893. The city then held about seven million people, and the crossing carried horse-drawn cabs, delivery carts and a growing number of motor buses. The Underground had reached the spot only three years earlier, when Piccadilly Circus station opened in 1906, so commuters came up from the platforms straight into the traffic. Theatres, music halls and shops in the surrounding streets drew evening crowds, and for many Edwardian Londoners the square stood as the center of West End entertainment and shopping under King Edward VII.
