Leicester Square in 1909 lay at the center of London's West End entertainment district, where the Alhambra and the Empire music halls drew large evening crowds, and its gardens were a common meeting place for clerks, shoppers and visitors. Edwardian London was expanding quickly, with electric trams, motor buses and the Underground carrying a population that had passed seven million across the wider metropolitan area. The square took its name from the 17th-century aristocratic houses that had given way over the previous century to hotels, restaurants and playhouses. Londoners knew it as a place of evening pleasure, though within a decade the neighborhood would begin turning toward the new picture houses that changed its character.
