In 1909, the green spaces around Buckingham Palace sat at the heart of an empire that governed a quarter of the world's population, and London was its capital. King Edward VII had been on the throne since 1901, and the palace was the monarch's London residence, so the parks beside it carried ceremonial and public weight. Green Park, once a royal hunting ground, had been open to Londoners for generations and served as a place to walk away from the crowded streets of Westminster and Mayfair. The city itself was growing fast, with a population of several million in the wider metropolis, electric trams and motor buses on the streets, and the Underground extending its lines into new suburbs. Londoners of the period would have known this district as the seat of the court and the government, where the business of empire and the rhythm of royal life met the everyday traffic of the capital.
