Hyde Park in London in 1909 sat at the western edge of the city's fashionable core, where the Park Lane carriage traffic gave way to a broad expanse of grass, trees and the Serpentine lake. The park had been opened to the public as a royal estate in the seventeenth century, and by the Edwardian years it served as the great open-air stage of London society, with riders on Rotten Row, nursemaids and children at the water, and speakers gathering at Speakers' Corner near the Marble Arch end. Motor cars were beginning to share the roads with horse-drawn carriages, and the city's population was then well over four million, making the park one of its few large green refuges. Edward VII was king, and the years before the First World War were a time of sharp debate over social reform and women's suffrage, debates that were often staged in and around these public grounds.
