Buckingham Palace and Green Park in London, photographed in 1909, sat at the heart of an empire that ruled roughly a quarter of the world's people. King Edward VII had been on the throne since 1901, and the palace served as the monarch's principal London residence. The park's open lawns and tree lines ran toward Piccadilly, offering a green break in a city of several million people crowded with horse-drawn cabs, omnibuses, and the first motor cars. Royal carriage processions along the Mall and crowds gathering near the gates were everyday sights for those who lived and worked nearby. Edward died in May 1910, and the memorial to his mother, Queen Victoria, was still taking shape in front of the palace.
