The holy tree at Matariya, a village northeast of Cairo, was a sycamore fig that local tradition linked to the Holy Family's rest during their flight into Egypt, and it drew pilgrims of several faiths for centuries. David Roberts sketched Egypt on his 1838 to 1839 journey, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into lithographs for *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F. G. Moon in parts between 1846 and 1849. Roberts's views of Egyptian monuments and sites were among the most widely circulated images of the country in the mid-nineteenth century, and this plate shows the Western public's growing appetite for the biblical landscape.
