Engraved after a painting by Mason Chamberlin, this portrait of Benjamin Franklin was published in London on November 1, 1778, by Fielding & Walker. It appeared opposite page 494 of William Russell's *History of America*, so readers met Franklin's face within a narrative of the colonies' conflict with Britain. That year Franklin was serving as an American commissioner in Paris, where he helped secure the French alliance, which made him one of the most prominent figures in the revolution at the moment this print appeared.
